I really wanted to like this book.The title is so cute; the cover is SO cute!
I tried reading it three times, but every time I got to the part where the author tricked his pescatarian Jewish girlfriend into eating a pigs flesh, it just stopped me cold.
I could not get past it, and finally just gave this not-so-cute book to the thrift shop.

Jew And Improved How Choosing To Be Chosen Made Me A Better Man eBook Benjamin Errett Reviews
I never expected to enjoy this book as much as I did. It is not only for potential converts. As a Reform (actually Reconstructionist) Jew, I found that Errett answered many of my questions, including
1. How one can be an Agnostic and still a Jew, and
2. How one can accept all the prayers that glorify god (that have always stuck in my throat as being self-serving).
His message -- that actions are often sufficient and can lead to belief -- struck home. I recommend this book to anyone -- of any religion --who has ever questioned and sought answers.
Having been "introduced" to Judaism by Reform, Conservative and Orthodox teachers, I can relate to the terrible experience Benjamin and his fiancée Sarah had with the mercurial "Ruth" (who is, by turns, dictatorial and lovey-dovey). Some of the descriptions of the classes were laugh-out-loud funny.
Yet Errett's attempts to take on the religion seriously, on an adult level, are anything but laughable. Indeed, the chapter on how he came to understand his wife's family connection with the Holocaust (through her chimney-smoking grandmother, who later died of lung cancer) and his descriptions of the resonant truths of Jewish death ritual are extremely moving.
(and funny, too, in part - my husband works for the funeral home visited by Errett's class)
This book is terrifically well-written but never too slick to feel personal and even confessional, without wallowing into the dangerous emotional depths that these types of memoirs sometimes plumb.
Errett (sorry if I spelled it wrong!) comes to his conversion - under the auspices of Reform Judaism - with open eyes and a curious mind. In my opinion, he does indeed come away a better person, with a deeper understanding of his wife's Jewish background.
American readers may be mystified by the intricacies of ritual which Errett describes. He doesn't mention that this is a function of the Canadian Reform movement, which is far more ritual and halacha (Jewish law) oriented than that of Reform in the U.S. I suspect that in the U.S., the mikveh (ritual bath) and most certainly the hatafat dam brit (symbolic circumcision) might have been optional.
He also doesn't touch on the fact that, as a conversion within the Reform movement, his connection to Judaism, however seriously embraced, may still be questioned by many Jews within Toronto, Canada and the broader global community.
Certainly, having completed the Jewish Information Class, he comes to Judaism with more knowledge than many born Jews, and that's a great start. Like bar and bat mitzvah, which is supposed to be a beginning, not an end, to Jewish education, the reader is left hoping - in the best way - that Errett and his wife's Jewish journey will continue in the same thoughtful, meandering way (though hopefully without Ruth) for many years to come.
I heard a very enthusiatic review of this book on NPR so chose it as a gift for a friend of mine. I have heard back from her that she has loved reading it - found it very amusing as well as very informative. I am going to borrow it back from her and look forward to reading it myself.
