Matt is walking down Hollywood Boulevard with his friend, Officer Tim Blake, when a sniper picks off Blake, leaving Cooper wondering why. Matt Cooper was walking down the street when he recognized a policeman up ahead. As he caught up to officer Tim Blake they began chatting and catching up with each other's lives.A gust of wind blew a $5 bill in front of Matt, and as he bent over to pick up the money, a shot rang out. Matt turned to ask if Blake had heard that, but Blake had been shot. Cooper pulled him into a store and had the owner call the police, but it was too late for the officer: he was dead.
At the station Matt kept wondering if he had been the target. He had been on the curb side of the street, and his hat had a bullet hole in it. If he hadn't bent over to pick up that $5.....
But while Matt and Hollister were pondering that possibility, they were informed another officer had been shot. That ruled Matt out as the target. But was anyone in blue a target? Or were specific officers being targeted? And in either case, why?
Matt refused to back out of this one: he had been there when Blake died, and his hat had been hit: he was that close to being the victim. Besides, time was of the essence, and Hollister could use the help.
If the cases are connected, Matt will find out, and he will be there to see this case through to the end. Officer Blake had just told him about his new girlfriend and how she might be "the one". Matt had been the one to tell her Tim had been killed, and he wanted to be able to tell her they had caught the person responsible. He thought he owed her - and TIm - that much.

I've read all the Matt Cooper stories and enjoyed all but one. This story had the usual editing oversights that meant I had to read the sentence again - but that doesn't keep me from enjoying the story. I'm really fond of this character. I couldn't give five stars due to the editing but that doesn't mean the story isn't a five star read - at least to me. Can't wait for the next Cooper story.
Read all the multi-packs and shorts packs long ago, since 2012. The author has gotten better with age/practice. I've read almost all of the Cooper stories (1 - 230) and several of Mr. Bernico's short stories and most have not disappointed me. You'll find some poorly written or predictable stories, but for the most part they are fair to good. The Cooper series are better, but there's a few stinkers, too. They're great for a coffee break or a few minutes to relax.
